Illegal dumping

Landfill & transfer station information

WM negotiated a new contract with Washoe County in December 2016. Here's the new rules as we understand them – effective Feb. 1, 2017.

WM will only pick up their own 96 gallon lidded green can.

WM will issue their own recycling lidded can for single stream waste recycling (glass, metal, plastic, cardboard). The old green and yellow crates will no longer be used. Leave them out on the curb end of January for pickup.

New pricing: $22.70/month for 96 gal can; $19.84/month for 64 gal can.

In May and November up to 6 additional bags/boxes will be picked up - (combined weight no more than 50 lbs.)

25 stickers will be issued per household once a year to be used over the year on bags (no more than 3 ft by 3 ft & less than 50 lbs.) Extra stickers will be available for purchase – $2.56/sticker.

The above will be updated as more information becomes available.

Did you know.......
...that water based house paint is considered Hazardous Material when wet, but can be put into your normal garbage container if the lids are taken off and it's dried out, or you can solidify the material with dirt or kitty litter?

...that if you have a Waste Management green plastic 96 gallon container you are allowed to put seven extra 32 gallon bags of trash out on your normal service day?

....the Lockwood Landfill will take recyclable items free of charge during normal business hours, which are 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM seven days a week. Included in these items are white metals such as washers, dryers and other non-CFC containing metal appliances.

....that the Lockwood Landfill will take one residential refrigerator for free. There is a $25.00 charge for CFC removal for commercial or non Washoe County residents.

...that the Lockwood Landfill will also take bulky items one per household, such as mattresses and sofas, for free at any time during normal business hours.

....that they charge by the rated capacity of a vehicle at all of their facilities, so always bring a full load.

....the Lockwood Landfill/Transfer Stations will take only one computer monitor or television per residential customer at normal trash rates.

....that they operate their residential pick up routes Monday through Friday and work all Holidays. All containers must be curbside on your scheduled day by 7:00 AM.

....for safety purposes their drivers will only pick up the right/passenger side of the street at a time.

...the Transfer Stations will take 2 automotive batteries, 5 quarts of used uncontaminated motor oil and 2 gallons of anti-freeze for free per residential customer.

....the Lockwood Landfill will take 2 automotive batteries, 10 quarts of used uncontaminated motor oil and 3 gallons of anti-freeze for free per residential customer.

....they work during inclement weather; however, in order to service your container they need to have access to it. It needs to be clear of snow and the area around it has to be clear so they can move the container.

Illegal Dumping

Disposing of grass clippings, shrubs, and household goods on public or private lands is ILLEGAL. Violators may be subject to a $1,000 fine and/or six months in jail.

The Washoe County District Health Department, U.S. Forest Service, Sheriff’s Department, and Bureau of Land Management conduct routine surveillances to apprehend any illegal dumpers.

To report an illegal dumping in progress, contact the following public safety dispatch numbers: Reno and unincorporated areas 334-2121, and Sparks 353-2231.

To provide information on the location of an illegal dumpsite, call the District Health Department at 328-2434. Residents may be eligible for a monetary reward in the information provided results in a conviction.

Deserts and canyons are not the place to dispose of yard waste, household goods and other debris. Lockwood Landfill will accept yard waste and other bulky items such as furniture and appliances any day of the week.
